Annette

Mother of Sandra and Marjorie, Annette operates a successful small vegetable stand.  With our assistance, she purchased a freezer which allows her to sell cold drinks  She was able to repay her microloan from Kulikayo in one year, fully a year ahead of schedule.  Annette is a hard working, wise businesswoman and dedicated mother.

Farida

The mother of Sara and Moses kindly opened her home up to their nephew Cutie when his family could no longer care for him.  Farida is a skilled seamstress who operates a small tailor shop as well as makes paper bags to sell in the village.

Thus far into our tailor shop project with Farida she has not been busy enough to make a good living.  We have recently decided to help her buy a bale of used children’s clothing to sell in her shop as this is a lucrative business in Uganda.  We are hopeful that this will increase business and allow this bright woman to shine.

Joyce

Mother of 9 children, two of this beautiful woman’s kids – Brenda and Jackson – are sponsored through Kulikayo.  Joyce is a kind woman who always wears a smile on her face despite any hardships she may face.  She could almost be described as “jolly”, and this trait has certainly been passed on to her children.

Joyce identified a problem to us in her village regarding water.  The water pump is too far from their homes, upwards of a 45 minute walk for some.  It is typically the children who fetch the water for the household and this causes several problems.  One of which is that an hour and a half round trip is a lot of time taken away from family and studies, and another is the concern for the safety of the children on the roads.

With Kulikayo’s help, Joyce was able to work with the Ugandan Water Authority and have a water tap installed on her property.  This allows her to sell water and make some money for her family as well as benefits the village immensely.

Sofia

Sofia is the mother of Shakira, Shatura, Saleh, Charlotte and Sasha.  A proud woman who works very hard to make ends meet for her kids.  When we met Sofia she was running a vegetable stand that was not very profitable.  With a clear idea in her mind of what she wanted to do, Kulikayo was able to provide a microloan to her to open a currency transfer business.

She has still not found this to be productive enough to prosper, and has since put herself through a course to learn to make educational workbooks.  As they say in Uganda, “Bit by bit we make a bundle.”

Rose

We first met Rose while she worked as the nurse at the Bright Kids children's home.  She impressed us with her knowledge and dedication, along with her love for all the children.

Rose now works with the public health system in a remote area, but her hours have been drastically cut due to funding and transportation issues.  She is struggling to get a small retail and bakeshop business started.

Maggie

Trained as a social worker, Maggie impressed us with her devotion to all the children while she was employed at the Bright Kids children's home.

She is now building a small storefront business and, with assistance from Kulikayo, has started a piggery and is raising chickens.

Jackie

Jackie is the Kulikayo Uganda Manager and does all of the day to day work with the children and families on the ground.  After graduating from university with an I.T. degree she found work at an orphanage where she found that children are really where her talents and passion lie.

Jackie is the mother to Jonathan, who shares his time between her and his grandparents’ house as they are an integral part of his education.  She has also taken in a nephew, Abe, whose mother is not able to care for him for the time being.

It is clear when you witness it how much the Kulikayo kids love their “Auntie Jackie.”  They call her when they need help, they share their successes with her, and confide in her.  We are truly lucky to have this wonderful young woman on our team.
